Hello and welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a blog hop wherein writers share an excerpt from their current WIP that somehow relates to the date. To join in, simply click the blue linky up there to the right.
I was doing some brainstorming this week and realised that the structure of Unchanging Tunes needs a good tightening up. I’ve pretty much got the ending planned out, but it requires some changes to earlier events, and in some cases, to the whole timeline. It seems silly to try to press on and have a “complete” first draft when so much of it won’t make any sense. And pressing on has actually been hard recently because there’s so much inconsistency in what I’ve got written so far, so I don’t know where to pick up from.
So I’ve archived the Unchanging Tunes project on my Writeometer app, even though the project aim was to reach 70k by December. I’ve reached 50k and I think there’s probably still another 25-30k left to write. I’ll be able to estimate more closely once I finish my plan. I’ve opened up a new Scrivener document. I need to figure out a new title that better suits the themes and the story, but this will remain the working one in the meantime.
For this week’s WIPpet, I have subtracted the date from the month and have four paragraphs for you. The cast of Casyl & Co. Circus are being briefed by the Captain of the Crown Prince’s Guard prior to the Prince and his family attending a performance. As Ria’s is one of the acts that interacts with audience members directly, she gets special instructions.
“For the fortune-telling, ask the Prince onstage. There will be a guard with him at all times, but he will stand to the side so as not to disrupt the performance. Do not touch the Prince. I understand you need a personal object for the act to work?”
“That’s correct.”
“He will have something prepared. He will hand it to the guard, who will hand it to you. Will that be a problem?”
“No, that’s fine.”
All right, that’s it from me for now. I’ll catch you on your own WIPpet posts soon.
I think it must be hard to have a gift like that and both be asked to perform it AND have to pretend that it’s all smoke and mirrors (at least, I assume that’s what she has to do).

It is accepted that the ability is real, but the various types of mind magic (as it is called in this world) are regarded with a great deal of suspicion. The fact that the Prince is attending this show at all is a surprise to many.

Having a talent and performing it on demand in front of skeptics can’t be easy… and with all these layers on indirect contact.

It’s definitely a lot to hink about on top of what already has to go into a performance. And there’s no opportunity to really rehearse for it, so it’s all a bit ad-hoc. But there is added drama when the performance actually takes place, so this turns out to be the least of their worries!

I really enjoy this story. Happy mapping. It will all come together. There are so many delicious pieces and characters, and I want to know what the Prince hands her.

Such a detailed process. What could possibly go wrong? And what will she be handed? And what will be her reaction? And…. so many questions!
