Hello and welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a blog hop wherein writers share an excerpt from their current WIP that somehow relates to the date. To join in, simply click the blue linky up there to the right.
If you were intrigued by my WIPpet a couple of weeks ago and wanted to read the full short story, you can do so here.
I don’t know whether I’ve been procrastinating on my lengthier WIPs lately, but I’ve been inspired to keep writing short fiction. I think I am partially feeling inspired by a writing buddy of mine and her sister, whom I happen to work with, who both got accepted into an anthology recently.
So I’m working on a couple of things in that vein. I’m actually writing this on Monday night while I have time. I’m actually spending my Wednesday evening at a talk about Frankenstein by some local horror writers. Should be interesting. On that note, here are six lines (digits of the date added together) about a monster under the bed. “She” is five-year-old Lara.
But she had seen it tonight. Previously, she had heard scratching around on the wooden floor beneath her bed and tonight when she stuck her head over the side to investigate, it hadn’t been quite quick enough to hide itself. The arm was scaly, the fingers too long, and the claws dragged along the floor.
She squeezed her eyes closed. The scratching on the wood stopped. Maybe the creature had gone.
It was a long time before she fell asleep.
But is it what you think? Probably not. At least, I hope not.
It’s a long weekend here this weekend, so I have no excuse not to get to all your posts! Training for Nepal is taking up a lot of my spare time, but I am trying to get back into my online-presence-groove. Slowly but surely. I’ve saved all you links from the past couple of weeks and have managed to visit most posts but if you haven’t received any comments from me on those posts yet, you should over the next couple of days. See you all soon!
This is very intriguing. I hope we’ll get to see more. 😀

It’s likely! I’ve got two stories on the go now so I’ll probably still be working on this one into the coming week. Thanks!

Pretty sure it would be a long time before I fell asleep too. Creepy!

Me too! I’m bad enough when I just hear creepy sounds; I don’t have to even see anything creepy.

Funnily enough, I was thinking about this earlier today – how scary everything is when you’re five (or thereabouts) and your imagination is vivid as can be. Whatever it is under Lara’s bed, you captured the feeling perfectly.

Thank you! I was scared of the most random things as a kid. That’s what a vivid imagination does.

Not certain at all I could sleep in that bed after that. Give me a solid platform any day.
