#WIPpet Wednesday – July 19, 2017

Hello and welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a blog hop wherein writers share an excerpt from their current WIP that somehow relates to the date.  To join in, simply click the blue linky up there to the right..

I’m currently revising the first draft of Memories and Magic, so I’ll share a WIPpet from the section I’m editing at the time. It’s so nice to be back to working on this after a couple of weeks of forced neglect! This excerpt is from what is currently Chapter 8. Clara is accused of magic use, and the Magic Guard is coming, so she makes a run for it. She ends up barreling through an open door and into the back room/kitchen of a bakery. I have a longer excerpt than I usually share: 26 lines for 19/7.

“I’m sorry,” Clara said between wheezing breaths. She motioned towards the door while she tried to calm her breathing. “They were chasing me,” she gasped out.

“Who?”

“People,” she said. “They wanted to throw me to the Magic Guard.”

“Why?”

“I got into a disagreement with a customer in my shop. He accused me of using magic on him.”

Well, it wasn’t a lie.

The baker was still eyeing her warily when they both heard the sound of a fist being pounded on a nearby door, along with the footfalls of people wearing heavy boots. Clara’s eyes widened and she looked around the room for a hiding place. The baker lifted the cloth on the bench she was working on.

“Under here,” she said.

Clara’s shoulders sagged with relief as she ran around the bench and ducked under the cloth where the baker was holding it up. There was plenty of room under the table. She heard the methodical thuds as the baker continued with her work.

A few minutes later, the pounding reached the bakery door. Clara heard the baker stop her work and make her way to the door.

“Can I help you?”

“Madam, my name is Captain Rikard Voidsun.” Clara’s stomach clenched. Everyone in the city knew that name. He had the record for most magicians brought to trial in the whole Magic Guard. Once he was on their tail, he was ruthless when it came to bringing them down. “We’re looking for a young girl who may have come this way. She would have been running. Dark skin and long hair by all accounts. Have you seen her?” Clara held her breath as she waited for the baker to answer.

“No, sir.”

“Do you mind if we search your premises?”

There was a long pause and then, “Of course not, sir.”

Clara swore under her breath.

Oh, look who it is. I created Rikard Voidsun while brainstorming this WIP’s sequel during the Story a Day challenge this year and he figured in a few of the WIPpets I shared during that month. I decided to give him a cameo here. He has no idea how much Clara will change his life in another year or so. ^_^

That’s  all from me now. I will head off and catch you on your own WIPpets soon enough! (I am gradually improving my rate of visiting others’ posts. Soon I’ll be at 100%!)

  1. I’m going to use you as my inspiration for visiting. I’ve had a hard time of that lately, myself…

I love this excerpt. It catches her fear and spunk perfectly. More, please! =D

  2. Uh oh! That sounds like it could go badly for Clara. I think I’d swear too. I’m hoping the baker has an idea, or they’re both in trouble.

  3. Oh my gosh! The suspense! I am on the edge of my seat!
Is Clara going to get caught?! Or is there going to be a distraction? Or is she going to use magic to get out of this situation?
    Love this snippet 🙂
